Sometimes you can do everything right and your kids still don’t like the au pair. Perhaps you asked all the right questions in the interviews. You probably talked to the au pair about your children’s personalities and interests. You probably picked someone from our au pair agency in London who seemed like the perfect match. So, what can you do when the kids still don’t like her?
First, remember not to give up. Children tend to change their minds a lot. They can sometimes be distrustful of someone they don’t know and take a long time to get to know them. Other times they may dislike something that the au pair has said or done that has set them off. It could even be something small, like being told to eat a food they dislike.
Talk to your children about why they dislike the au pair. Try to discern whether there is something the au pair has said or done, or whether your kids have simply decided for no apparent reason that they don’t want her to take care of them.
If there is a problem with something the au pair has said to them, try talking to her. Be kind and approachable. Your au pair is probably quite young and far away from home and family. Au pairs in London may be home sick and lonely. Do not be accusatory. Simply say you are trying to figure out how she can get along better with the kids.
Next, talk to the au pair and the children together. See if you can come to some understanding and let everyone know that you have their best interests at heart, and want them all to get along.
