An elevator is a covered and enclosed lifting carriage which is used to transport passengers and goods between the floors of a building or other built structures. These are generally operated electrically and today are always regulated by strict health and safety policies.
Although a form of elevation has been discovered which has been dated from several centuries BC,the modern day versions of the elevator lifts as we would recognise it today was invented in the course of the nineteenth century.
Elisha Graves Otis originally invented the first known safety elevator in 1852 and more sophisticated variations of elevation lifts were developed from there. Otis’s new lift mechanisms ensured that first and foremost, passenger safety was made certain and maintained even in the event of lifting cables being severed or accidentally snapped.
Elisha Otis went on to establish the well-known elevator company, Otis, named after him and with elevator creation based on the abiding principles of safety and speed management. These principles are still the basis of modern elevator technology and the Otis elevator company is still trading today.Shortly after in 1857,his first commercial passenger lift was installed in a commercial department store building in New York.
With the development of the commercial elevator and the improved passenger lift, the expansion of the innovation in building design also grew exponentially. These safer and faster elevator lifts allowed for the growth in skyscraper technology since the previous versions of the passenger lifts which were slow and cumbersome, only allowed for a limited number of storeys. Here at Elevation Lifts we have the expertise to maintain and repair various elevator systems in commercial and domestic buildings. With industry knowledge of all up-to-date health and safety procedures we are a lift company who can be trusted with the mechanisms of elevation.
