Zinc has been around in various forms since the 13th century and in its sheet form can be used for roofing, cladding and flashings. It is a versatile metal and is aesthetically pleasing, but its main benefit is that it is durable and can last 25 years or more. Zinc roofing is now establishing itself as the roofing material of choice because of its quality finish in a variety of different textures.
Prices can vary for zinc but it is generally thought of as a reasonably priced metal for the eventual finish that is produced. Zinc roofing also trumps other metals in terms of building regulations since its not as restricted. It requires very little maintenance and holds its look well over long periods of time. Eventually the metal will lose its vibrant finish, but it will by no means turn into an eye sore.
Copper has been around for as long as 10,000 years and has a multitude of uses. Copper roofing is highly versatile and its distinctive dull orange look can add a touch of character to any building. Over time the metal reacts with air to form a protective green coating which further enhances its resistance to the elements. Its low thermal co-efficient also means that it doesn’t expand and contract as much as other metals meaning it is resistant to a variety of harsh weather conditions. Like zinc it can be used for cladding, flashings and drain pipes. Copper has been known to last as long as 700 years yet due to its abundance it is not an expensive option.
Copper roofing does not present the same risks to the environment or human health that other roofing materials have in the past and it is a cost-effective option that can bring a classic look to any building.
