Food For Felines

Britain has always been a nation of cat lovers and the continued health of your moggie is all important to you. Cat nutrition should be at the top of your list of vigilance when it comes your pet.

Many animals are built to adapt to their environment and can handle a lot of what it throws at them. But this doesn’t mean that you can be lapse in feeding them. Some animals can burn away almost all fat on their bodies and half of their protein, which is clearly something that helps them to survive harsh winters. However, the same is not the case for water. If only 15% of their water is lost then it can mean death.

A continuous fresh supply of water will do your cat no harm especially if it is provided alongside crunchy, dry food. The general rule for your cat is that it requires 50ml of water for every kilogram of body mass per day meaning that a 4 kg cat should drink at least 200ml. There is no need to worry about your cat over drinking, if they need to drink they will do it.

So cat nutrition is vital, but what if you have a kitten? To begin with kittens require a very specific balance of phosphorous and calcium to maintain a healthy metabolism. This usually means you have to buy food specifically prepared for kittens. To ensure that your kitten doesn’t develop heart or eye problems, food with a good supply of taurine is essential.

Despite what you might think about animals in the wild, it is not really a good idea to feed your cat or kitten raw meat. Raw meat can carry very harmful bacteria like E.coli and salmonella. This can easily transmitted between other animals, around your house and even to humans.

One of the most common effects of poor cat nutrition

A kitten or cat is a lovable addition to any home and owners often indulge their pet with love and affection. This is important for a bond to form as neglected pets will often run away or become distant. However, cats can often become ill or have other health problems as a result of a lack of understanding about the correct cat nutrition. Most owners are aware of foods a cat should not be fed or that are harmful to eat as their digestive system is very different to our own. This is why brands such as Hills Pets are so popular as they ensure optimum nutrition for any pet diet. Despite this, it can often be difficult to regulate the amount of food a cat or kitten is consuming. Feeding a feline pet too much of even a quality brand of pet food, can have disastrous health consequences.

Obesity is a serious issue for any cat often caused unintentionally by owners rewarding their cat frequently with treats and extra scraps of food. Although it is good practise to reward good behaviour, over feeding any animal over a sustained amount of time can be very detrimental. Many people do not realise their pet is clinically obese and just think they are overweight. However, obesity is much more serious and can lead to other illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart problems and diabetes to name but a few. Cats, unlike dogs, are notorious for their laid back attitude and lack of exercise. This is particularly important to register when feeding as it will not be burnt off but stored as excess fat. To combat obesity any pet diet should be monitored closely to ensure they are only fed what is necessary, receiving positive cat nutrition and frequently weighed to spot any early signs.

Vet Approved Pet Food

Every cat owner wants to minimise vet treatment as much as possible as it is in the interests of both your pet and your wallet. This is why specially formulated foods have been developed to keep your cat or kitten healthy. Science Plan VetEssentials from Hill?s Pet provides vital, clinically proven techniques that can keep your pet healthy.

Gum disease is a huge problem, but with the right supplements your cat?s bacteria build up could drop by 25% over just 7 days. By supplementing cat nutrition with Hill?s Pet Science Plan VetEssentials, your cat could start to feel health benefits very quickly indeed. This is especially important because ongoing research is increasingly suggesting that taking care of oral hygiene can help maintain your cat?s overall health.

By using kibble technology, the act of chewing will help your cat or kitten to clean their teeth and freshen breath. Kibbles are great for pets to chew and their gentle action helps to remove bacteria laden plaque and tartar. The kibble doesn?t break into crumbs as the pet chews since they are soft and only break apart once they reach the gum line. This makes for a deep clean in between teeth and in those hard to reach places.

VetEssentials Kitten is a great food to start your cat?s new life. It actively helps your kitten?s growing metabolism by providing DHA omega 3 fatty acids, which occur naturally in the mother?s milk. This aids brain development, healthy joints, bones and ensures adequate visual development.

High levels of vitamin E aid immunity at this vital stage, not to mention the fact that Hill?s Pet Science Plan VetEssentials are tasty and easy to digest. Balanced control of pH and mineral levels helps keeps your kitten?s urinary tract healthy and free from infection.
