Psychological Trauma And Its Consequences

Psychological trauma is a serious condition that can overwhelm anyone. Emotions become almost impossible to control since the brain is unable to function normally and this manifests in disturbing recollections that, to the sufferer, can seem like reliving a nightmare. The power of the brain is an undisputed fact, it has abilities and capabilities most are unaware of, but fortunately, through ongoing research and EDMR training the impact of these memories can be lessened.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing was first proposed by the Clinical Psychologist Dr Francine Shapiro. Dr Shapiro made the observation and breakthrough that certain movements of the eye can alter and reduce the affect that traumatic thoughts and feelings can have on the patient. Thus, EDMR training was developed to utilise and refine this technique as much as possible.

Under normal circumstances, experiences are sensed and passed into the brain through an emotional filter called the Amygdala. This data is then sent to be processed in terms of space and time in the Hippocampus which then stores in the left hemisphere as a newly learned experience. Unfortunately traumatic experiences come through as emotionally charged pieces of information which never get processed because they stay in the right hemisphere of the brain.  Any subsequent reminder of the event can then retrigger an intense emotional response. This can result in nightmares, disturbing thoughts and flashbacks, all of which can affect a person’s ability to live a normal life.

EDMR has been developed to help the brain to get past this psychological trauma and return to a normal functional routine by approximating REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) which enables the brain to naturally begin to process the traumatic information. It includes no drugs or memory loss and the patient can remember the event in its entirety, only minus the traumatic feelings.
