Why Women Love Bags

These days it’s all about the bag. But why do women love handbags so much? And why do they need so many? To those out there who simply don’t understand, here’s a short guide to women’s love affair with clutch bags, shoulder handbags, and every other kind of handbag out there!

Handbags are a symbol of social status. The handbag industry first started to flourish as women began to go out to work and needed something to put their belongings (and hard earned cash!) in. Handbags were therefore associated with financial independence. A bag will contain a woman’s most essential items – and a few non-essential ones too – and she wants to house them in the most attractive way possible. Celebrities have also helped to contribute to the rise of the handbag and in the last decade designer handbags have been selling at twice the rate of designer clothes.

As to why women need so many handbags – a bag is a vital part of a woman’s complete outfit, not merely something to put their stuff in because it won’t fit in their pockets. Therefore, just as their jewellery will complement their clothes, so too will their handbag. Shoulder handbags are worn right next to the clothing and so it is imperative not to have a clash in colour. And while it might be easy just to buy a black bag that will ‘go with everything’, the fact is that you don’t wear the same clothes everyday so why should you use the same bag?

Another consideration for having multiple handbags is size. The working woman might need a large handbag to carry all her work essentials with her every day, but this is no good for a Saturday night out. Clutch bags are both small enough to carry your money, lipstick, keys and phone, but can also really jazz up an outfit.
