Extending the Life of Your Underwear

Some people consider lingerie as a feat of engineering, and consequently it doesn’t come cheap, particularly if you are an unusual size or need plus size bras. You might not even notice that your bra is reaching the end of its life, but some signs to look out for are that it will not fit as well, becoming loose or saggy (and will have the same effect on your chest!). Although using the different clasps on the back band will help to extend its life, it is generally recommended that you replace your bra every six to eight months. That said, this will depend on the size of your collection and how much wear each one gets. Leaving at least a day between wearing each bra will allow the elastic to recover in between, and this will make it last longer.

Whether you wear regular or plus size bras, you will want to take the best care of them possible. How you need to wash your bra will depend on the materials it is made from, and should be indicated on the washing label. Manufacturers generally recommend hand washing, particularly where there is delicate lace involved, and this will decrease the chance of bobbling and plucking. It will also prevent the underwire coming out and getting tangled in the workings of your washing machine! Consequently, if you do decide to use the machine to wash your underwear, always use a washing machine bag. Hand washing is also especially recommended for t-shirt or moulded bras, to make sure the padding retains its shape and doesn’t get any unsightly indentations. Likewise, store these bras carefully for the same reason.
