More and more councils are considering switching off the majority of streetlights during specific hours of the night in a bid to save both energy and, more importantly for them, money. Whilst in some cases this may be a good thing, there are many other ways in which the problem could be tackled.
The potential to use solar lighting in a cheap and effective way is growing all the time and yet the majority of councils are not prepared to put the money into such programs, even though it would undoubtedly save money in the long run whilst ensuring that people were as safe as possible. Turning lights off at night can lead to not only accidents, but also the potential for a rise in crime too.
For many residents, there are things that can be done should their local councils decide not to invest in renewable energy sources and choose instead to switch off streetlights overnight. The more people who have outdoor lights, the more illuminated streets will be, and the safer both residents of the area and those passing through will be. Solar powered outdoor lights can be sourced very easily and very cheaply and the more residents that use solar LED lights outside their homes, the less that such changes will affect areas.
Exterior LED lights are generally a good idea even for those in areas that are unlikely to be affected by dimmed or removed streetlights. It is not unusual for any area to be without streetlights on occasions and having lighting outside one’s home will ensure that not only are they able to ensure their own safety when heading to their own home, but in turn they will also be helping to illuminate the area for others too. And by choosing solar powered options, the lights will cost nothing to run either.
