Campaign will provide troops with phone cards

Many people around the world make use of phone cards to help them contact friends, partners and family members. International phone cards can significantly reduce the cost of such communications and are ideal for those who do not want to or are unable to enter into contracts with telecommunications providers.

Among those to rely on these products are soldiers, who often spend many months at a time separated from their loved ones.

To help such individuals remain connected, a shopping centre in the US is participating in a campaign to provide troops with phone cards, Your Houston News reports.

Willowbrook Mall is among the retail centres taking part in Operation Troop Talk and under the terms of the appeal, it is donating reloadable mobile phones to United Service Organisations centres. In addition, it is asking consumers to purchase refill international phone cards that will be used with the handsets.

Commenting on the initiative, Willowbrook Mall general manager Brenda Crawford said: “Operation Troop Talk was inspired by the ‘I Will’ campaign, which encourages citizens to join the 9/11 tribute movement.

She added: “All of us throughout the country shared in the tragedy of 9/11, and I think that many of us will be looking for ways to honour the anniversary. To me, it is very fitting that we do something that can make life a little easier for the individuals who work to ensure our freedom.”

Ms Crawford went on to state that, through Troop Talk, people can help by contributing a refill card and, as a community, they can make a “real difference” to the lives not only of armed forces personnel, but also their loved ones who remain at home.

Indeed, there is evidence that being able to keep in regular contact with family members can significantly boost the morale of troops who are stationed abroad.

Building Your First Datacentre

It is difficult to know where to begin if you are wanting to build your first datacentre. There are plenty of options on the market, all of which promise something different. But what should you ideally be looking for when you have made the decision to use a data centre supplier to build your solution?

A data centre company that has many returning, loyal customers is a safe bet. They should be able to offer you field tested solutions that have real world precedents, with all of the relevant information to back it up. This is ideally where you should begin – previous success can result in your success. This lessens the risk to you dramatically if you already know the product is in existence and is working. All design should be documented and all construction standards met. It should also utilise space efficiently, maximising your return on investment. Operational procedures should also be field tested to offer maximum stability.

The relationship between the contractor and supplier should be long term since there are no short term, quick fixes when it comes to datacentres. They required ongoing maintenance and expertise. You should also benefit from volume pricing, which results in bulk charges rather than a costly one-off investment.

If the supplier can give you guarantees it should be a weight off your mind. The more experience a supplier has, the more guarantees they will be able to make with regards to overall price and schedule. This will allow you to budget adequately and plan around its development and integration so as to cause minimum disruption to your daily business. The next guarantee should be performance. The datacentre should be able to deliver everything that you need, no ifs or buts. It is pointless investing in something as large as this without it being able to deliver everything you need.
