It is worth remembering that every famous Hollywood director once made their first film. From the glory days of Super 8 through to the ability for modern filmmakers to make a cost-effective feature with extremely hi-tech equipment, no matter who you are, if you want to direct, at one point you will have to make that all-important first film.
What many people forget about acting, is that it is extremely hard to make it to the top of any profession. The idea of ‘making it’ as an actor in most people’s minds involves becoming famous and being one of the most celebrated thespians of your time. However, those going into other industries very rarely think the same way – for example, for those in the police force, becoming an inspector is a very well paid and respected job, but still many rungs down the ladder from the comparable A-list.

A big part of any production are the theatre sets. So much energy, vision and ambition goes into creating incredible backdrops that really help to bring a production to life and are an integral part of the show. So much effort goes into getting them just right. And when it comes to most productions this aspect of putting on a show throws up all sorts of interesting challenges. Which can leave people tearing their hair out if they can’t source the right props and items.
Cine film fuelled the explosion in home movies. Whilst they may not have had the clarity or the ease of modern day recording technologies, there is something unashamedly innocent about such filming, even if that innocence now only comes through in hindsight and nostalgia.
This summer, a few films are going back to more humble roots. The adventure films of the 80s that gave families the perfect summer movie experience are back, and at the forefront of this is a new film called Super 8.
