This summer, a few films are going back to more humble roots. The adventure films of the 80s that gave families the perfect summer movie experience are back, and at the forefront of this is a new film called Super 8.
Not only is this film likely to reawaken our love for these classic and simple family films, but there is something else that it is likely to reawaken our passion for – cine film. Whilst we may have known it by different names, Super 8 was the staple of both wannabe filmmakers and families alike – in fact, it offered the chance for almost anyone to make movies, whether they be home movies documenting children growing up or simply a way for budding directors to practice their craft.
What this new film is likely to remind us is just how fantastic these home videos were. There is something extremely nostalgic about such simple films made long before digital cameras made home movies ubiquitous and, for many, all those memories and old films have been long forgotten.
It is likely that many will start digging out those old cine film reels and looking for ways to transfer them on to DVD. As with video transfer and hi8 transfer, turning those old cine films into full DVDs is not only easy, but can also be fairly cost effective too. The great benefit of such transfer is that whilst you will suddenly have a far easier way of watching those old tapes, you will not lost the great ‘feel’ that these old home movies had.
Whilst many have looked into hi8 transfer and video transfer in the past, this year we will no doubt be reminded that, even compared to modern technology, it is actually those old super 8 films that had gave us all the most enjoyment.
