Can fireplaces add value to a home?

Fireplaces are still a main focal point in many homes up and down the country. A marble fire surround will appeal to a young couple in the same way as it will appeal to a businessman. Essentially, fireplaces create a warm and cosy atmosphere in a home and that is why they can add value to a property.

Of course, there are some people do simply do not like fireplaces as they may prefer a more contemporary look. However, by keeping a fireplace in a property you give the next owners the option of keeping in it or having it removed.

It is possible to mix a traditional marble fire surround with an innovative and contemporary look. For example, a flat screen television can be placed above the fireplace and in this way both the television and fireplace remain as focal points in the room. In the same way, a fireplace does not need to be left open as it can be filled up and then used to display ornaments and decorative items such as candles or flowers.

An electric fire can also be placed in the fireplace rather than having a real fire. This gives the room a cleaner and more modern look that may appeal to the modern couple who like the warmth of a fire but who do not have the time to clean out a fireplace. This practical aspect will certainly appeal to those busy parents who do not have time for things like that when running around after a toddler.

By not having a fireplace in the home, some potential buyers could be put off by the fact that the room looks too clinical due to there being no focal point. For many people, without a fireplace it is difficult to see them living in the property and so this may well contribute to lowering the value of the home itself.
