Recently, hundreds of women in Scotland braved the cold conditions to walk for miles in their bras. They rose to the challenge to raise money for cancer sufferers, the Highland News reports.

In total, the group strolled in their lingerie for 13 miles through the streets of Inverness, which is the capital of the Highlands and is located on the coast in north-east Scotland. The event was dubbed the Bra Nicht Walk.

Participants kicked off proceedings by congregating at the recreational hall at Raigmore Hospital, which is an acute general medical centre and was originally set up in 1941.

Starting at 10pm, they set off from this point and walked along the streets. Some of the women were wearing brightly decorated bras. And, getting into the spirit of the occasion, local officials arranged for the light at Inverness Castle and the lilluminations on the bridges over the River Ness to be turned pink.

City Provost Jimmy Gray did the honours of turning the alternative lighting on. Previously, he had told the Highland News that he was “more than happy” to be involved in the good cause. He noted that it is a worthy effort and all the money raised stays in the surrounding area.

This is not the first time local women have raised money by donning such lingerie and walking through the town. Over the last three years, the event has raised around £130,000 for cancer patients in the Highlands.

More generally, in recent times many events similar to this one have taken place around the world. Often, women wear their bras and head on organised walks like this specifically to raise cash for breast cancer.

This disease is the most common form of cancer in the UK and around 46,000 women are diagnosed with it each year, according to NHS figures.
